Fall of the Aztec Empire
By James Baldwin 3rd Hour
There were many reasons why the Aztec empire fell. Some of these reasons were poor relationships with other tribes, economic troubles, the Spaniards weaponry while in battle, and the disease known as smallpox was spreading. The Aztecs didn’t know what the disease was and how to cure it. The biggest reason the empire fell was of a war between them and Spanish.
The war between Spain and the Aztecs went from 1519 to 1521. A Spanish explorer by the name of Hernan Cortés planed to conquer the empire. The first killing was a massacre of Aztec nobles gathered for a religious ceremony. A Spanish Officer named Pedro De Alvarado led some men and killed 200 people. After the massacre the Aztecs fought back and lead the Spanish to retreat for more men.
The Spaniards returned to the Empire to conquer. The Spaniards marched strait through the empire and conquered it. On August 13th 1521 after several months of unequal battles, Techochtitlien, this was the capital of the Empire, was captured and fell to the Spanish. The Aztec Empire was destroyed. The ruins of Tenochtitlien were the base upon which the Spaniards build their colony.
